postheadericon Cape Cod Septic System Pumping Frequency

We are often asked how often should septic tanks be pumped on Cape Cod?

The technical answer to pumping frequency is when the level of solids at the bottom of the tanks- sludge- and what is floating on top of the water- scum- is 25%  the depth of the water level in the septic tank.  As an example- if the tank is 4 feet deep and the sludge and scum in the septic tank is 1 foot in depth it should be pumped.

These are general guide lines for the average home owner:

  1. Homes with garbage disposals- yearly
  2. Summer Homes and Seasonal Usage- every two to four years.
  3. Homes with cesspools- Yearly-at the end of the season- it is very important to remove the solids from the system and let it dry out and rest over the fall and winter months.
  4. Septic Systems younger than 8 years old- every two years,
  5. Older systems- yearly.

Do you know that the septic system is probably the most expensive mechanical system attached to your home. It is just as important to pump on a regular basis, as it is to change the oil in your car.  If you dont pump often enough the system will fail prematurely.
